Emission Reduction Units

A shared effort today, to safeguard the resources for the generations to come

Under the Scopes 1 and 3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, organizations and cities around the world can measure the CO2 emissions generated by their direct activities and ancillary activities (i.e. those not directly under their control). Once they know their impact, they can choose to offset those emissions through direct abatement actions or through the purchase of Carbon Offsets (Certificates proving the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions).

How does it work?

The projects that avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere receive Carbon Offsets certificates. Each certificate documents the removal or reduction of one ton of CO2 equivalent (ton CO2e).

The projects that generate these certificates are mostly energy efficiency, energy replacement and capture of greenhouse gases projects.

The criterion that unites them all is additionality: a project is “additional” if the income provided by the sale of the Carbon Offset is essential for its economic feasibility.

The projects must respect a certain quality standards. An external audit, performed by internationally recognized independent third parties, verifies the compliance of the project to these standards. An external audit is also necessary to determine how many emission reduction certificates are to be attributed to a project.

The Carbon Offset Certificates are issued on electronic registers according to different systems, which are mutually exclusive and differ in the environmental standards they apply, the supervisory mechanisms or institutions as well as the degree of formalization.

What are the most recognized standards?

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the UNFCCC, whose certificates are called UN Certified Emission Reductions (CER).

The Verified emissions reduction (VER) and verified carbon units (VCU), both available in different quality standards (for example: VER Gold Standard).

What can we do together?

We are a specialized and multifaceted consultant to all those companies, organizations and cities that have set, or would like to set, goals of sustainability and reduction of environmental impact, at any stage: from the definition of the target to the procurement strategy.

  1. We support our partners and customers in identifying the best strategy to achieve the stated objectives (sustainability, additionality, corporate social responsibility)
  2. Together, we identify the most appropriate solutions.
  3. Through our trusted partners, we showcase suitable projects and support in finding the projects that best fit our clients needs.
  4. We source carbon offsets or carbon offsets portfolios from projects around the world.
  5. We ensure the control and maintenance of standards.
